Conservation only happens when you do something practical.
Sometimes this can be to fence off an area and exclude management, but in a modern environment this is rarely an effective measure. Many species that are suffering population declines and range contractions are doing so because of the pressure to farm more efficiently or accommodate more infrastructure. This is driven by all of us as consumers who want the cheapest prices, but there is still plenty that can be done. Some effective conservation projects are simple and result in in huge biodiversity gains with a very limited usage of land – digging a small pond in a garden is a good example. Other projects may vary in scale and ambition but if a project can combine conservation benefits with commercial or educational value then it will definitely have a long-term benefit. Creating a dedicated wildlife area within a school grounds would be a good example as would managing a community woodland in such a way as to provide an income in combination with conservation gains.
